The pink color is due to the salt-loving creatures which thrive there during the dry season. These features can be seen in the underlying detailed satellite image of Lake Natron. Lake Natron is one of the most spectacular pink lakes in the world, but don’t let that fool you. After the rains, a thin layer of water remains, which splits the salt into floating crust or `trona’. In the dry season, the reverberation of the white and irregular salt surface becomes blinding.
The erosion of the surrounding volcanic rocks has enriched the waters of the rivers with large quantities of dissolved salts, which, transported into the lakes, have crystallized due to the high evaporation caused by the strong insulation. And the lake is the only breeding area for the 2.5 million Lesser Flamingoes that live in the valley. The alkali salt crust on the surface of the lake is often colored red or pink by the salt-loving microorganisms that live there. The red areas are due to the presence of algae, the white areas are salt flats and salt islands, and the dark areas are lagoons around the lake’s margin.
